Beauty on the Go If you’ve ever had a bad hair day while traveling, this is for you. Maxine Park
A fun way to rev up your beauty routine is to adopt products from places you love to visit. During my last trip to Venice, Italy's humidity levels were high and the frizzies were out in full force. No matter how high the voltage on my hairdryer, I could not keep them under control!
After a trip to the new Pinault museum, Palazzo Grassi, I wandered down two little alleys to find myself at Santa Maria Novella, a specialty shop with products that not only smell amazing, but are also made from high-quality ingredients. Originating in Florence in the 13th century, the products were originally created by Dominican friars in their monastery. In 1612, the doors of the apothecary were opened to the public under the name Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, one of the world’s oldest pharmacies.
I was instantly delighted with the place and became a devoted fan of the Balsamo Per Capelli. Its rich consistency keeps hair nicely moisturized and free of flyaways, due, I suppose, to the wheat bran lipids and caramel sugar. I was more than happy to abandon my hairstyle for a slick ponytail. And then I figured, why rinse it out? I created my own set of rules and left it in all day. In the morning, my hair was so soft that I opted for this easy routine every day, accessorized with silk scarves in varying colors. (For fine hair Santa Maria Novella recommends the Crema al Miele made from 100% organic honey.)
Santa Maria Novella also offers guided tours of the historic pharmacy, reserve a space by calling ahead. They also have stores in New York and Los Angeles.
