Cocktails at the Ritz
The world's greatest bartender gives lessons
James Paxton

The Hemingway Bar at the Paris Ritz may be the world’s best bar. It serves superb cocktails in a woodsy English-club setting, with photos of Ernest Hemingway adorning each wall. In 1944, Papa and a group of Allied soldiers made history by liberating the Ritz from the Germans.

The bar is tucked all the way in the back of the hotel, meaning that if you don't enter via the rue Cambon entrance; you will have to pass through a series of salons. No doubt, you will meet some friends on the way, each bound to report home that you paid respects to the great American writer...in the middle of the afternoon.

Well, not anymore: every Saturday at 3 p.m. (reservation required), Colin Field, the world's greatest bartender and head barman at this literary shrine, will teach you his mixing secrets to the best cocktails. It will cost you €100 to learn how to mix a cocktail that you will drink three times, “once with the eyes, then with the nose, and at last with the palate.“ Let us, fans of Papa Hemingway, drink to that!
