Boston: History, Culture, Art and much more
Boston is one of the first cities founded in America. In 1620 the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and within a few years settled Boston. The Pilgrims also founded the first college in America: Harvard University. Throughout the history of the United States, pivotal events in history have occurred in Boston, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party and the famous ride of Paul Revere. A walk along the Black Heritage Trail offers a historical view of the amazing struggles of America’s black population. The Freedom Trail will take you through 16 landmarks and sites of the American Revolution. Some have been heavily restored, while some still maintain their humble originality, but they are all equally fascinating and significant in the history of this nation.
Within the city’s history lies a permanent contrast between traditionalism and liberalism. Though founded by Puritans so conservative they burned witches, Boston’s politics have proved to be groundbreaking with the liberal laws the city has passed, even into the 21st century. Boston was a haven city for many hopeful black Americans looking for a new life in the North on the Underground Railroad and played an active and valiant part in the abolition of slavery. Today’s Massachusetts lives up to its historic standards of equality and has passed a law legalizing gay marriage, despite it being deemed scandalous by parts of the country. Boston epitomizes democracy in America, where contrasting voices can all be heard. As yesterday’s religious communities in Boston played an important part in shaping the nation’s politics and policies, today’s academic community plays an important part in shaping the politics of today and tomorrow with new policies. The city is truly a center of learning and knowledge.
Those looking to experience American history first-hand need look no farther than Boston. A city rich with its own culture, Boston has the added appeal of hosting the famous landmark sites that shaped this nation. The city makes a great destination for a family trip, providing an opportunity to open children’s eyes to American history, giving them a better understanding and appreciation for the great country to which they belong. Whether they walk away knowing a few important dates and names or not, the result is still an enriching experience that will no doubt bring the family together. |
