Gourmet Specialties in New York Cuisine: Annisa Restaurant
Annisa: One of Manhattan’s best restaurants

temp/-A2035-New-York-Annisa-Restaurant.jpg
is certainly among Manhattan’s best restaurants, although not among the most outstanding. And it’s not a place for special occasions, but rather your special ’round-the-corner restaurant.

opened in June of 2006, and ever since this West Village nouvelle American restaurant has had raging success with both the public and the critics. By now, everybody seems to know that Annisa means “ women” in Arabic, that the restaurant is co-owned by Anita Lo and  Jennifer Scism, and that Ms. Lo has been named one of ten “Best New Chefs in America” by Food and Wine magazine as well as “Best New Restaurant Chef” by the Village Voice. Anita’s partner, Ms. Scism, is a charming hostess as well as an outstanding sommelier. As the Michelin Guide—that gave one star to the restaurant—pointed out, most of its 90 wine labels are either made by female vintners and/or made at vineyards with female owners. Ah, !

The all-white dining room creates a soothing, comforting ambiance that gently fades into the background once your food arrives. From then on, all your attention becomes intensely focused on the sophisticated cuisine—not so very different from our favorite restaurants in Paris. The Five Course and Seven Course Tasting Menus (at US$68 and US$88) are an ideal way to sample the talents of this extraordinarily gifted chef. Our favorite entrees (so far) include the Chicken with Chanterelles accompanied bypig trotters and the Austrian Lamb with Szechuan Peppercorn. But we look forward to including more.
